The Urban Places Academy brings together decision-makers from cities, business, startups, and research with renowned instructors from both the professional and academic worlds. Course Content
Europe on the Verge of a Breakthrough: Autonomous Driving Scales Up (December 4, 2026)
Europe has long been in pilot mode when it comes to automated driving, but now the regulatory framework is shifting toward scaling up. In this module, we analyze what truly makes automated mobility services scalable: use cases, operations, regulation, business cases, and impact. With practical insights from a cross-border automated mobility project in the Basel area.

- Where is it most worthwhile to implement these services first? (Use Cases, application areas, prioritization)
- What does a viable operating model look like? (Operations, service quality, safety protocols, costs)
- What role does public transit play? (Integration, complementarity, system design)
- Regulation & Scaling in Europe: What is changing—and what remains challenging?
- Impact & Acceptance: How can we prevent automation from leading to more traffic instead of greater efficiency?

- A clear understanding of which factors truly drive quality of life in cities (comparable patterns from three benchmark cities: Copenhagen, Vienna, Zurich)
- Concrete starting points for how priorities regarding street space can be justified and implemented
- In-depth knowledge of passenger car fleets and charging infrastructure (current status and next steps), public transit electrification, depots, and network requirements; logistics fleets and operational requirements; (bi-)directional charging and practical implications; and real estate & transformation: connected power, investment logic, and location decisions
