Large AI language models such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude are becoming increasingly relevant in all areas of life. In this course, you will engage intensively with the current capabilities of such models from both practical and theoretical perspectives. In addition, we will discuss the legal aspects of their use, ethical implications, and potential impacts on the institution of the “university,” the administration of higher education and research institutions, and the job market.

Course Content

The course content is examined from various perspectives: technology, copyright law, administration, and users.

  • An overview of the capabilities of large language models, their strengths, limitations, and impact on society and the scientific community.
  • Key topics: Model fundamentals (architecture, training, types, limitations), practical work with language models (prompting, custom instructions, deep research, agents), copyright and ethical considerations, image and voice generation, and general changes in government and society.

Learning Goals

  • Based on the strengths and weaknesses of large language models, evaluate and classify their outputs.
  • Select the right language models for different tasks and use them effectively.
  • Structure chat prompts efficiently and purposefully, and utilize ChatGPT’s special features (Custom Instructions, Custom Models, Deep Research, Agent Mode).
  • Generate high-quality images and voices using prompts.
  • Assess the copyright and ethical implications of generative AI products, with a focus on their use in a university context.
  • Recognize and reflect on the impact of AI on society and the academic world.

This course is open to anyone interested in the topic.

Dr. Markus Frank
Dr. Markus Frank

Dr. Markus Frank M.P.A. is an Academic Councillor for Digital Humanities in the IT Group Humanities at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. His core areas of work are Research Software Engineering (especially Big Data and Artificial Intelligence) and psycholinguistics (empirical research using eye-tracking). He is the coordinator of the BA program "Digital Humanities - Linguistics & Literary Studies", where he also teaches. Mr. Frank is also a lecturer at the Bavarian University for Public Service and FAU Nuremberg/Erlangen in the areas of Artificial Intelligence and digital research projects. He works freelance as a consultant and speaker on Artificial Intelligence for public institutions (cities, ministries, authorities) with the Bavarian Academy for Administrative Management GmbH.

Mr. Frank studied German Linguistics, Modern German Literature, and Philosophy at LMU Munich. He completed his doctorate at LMU Munich in the field of cognitive corpus linguistics within the structured Linguistic International Doctorate Program of the Faculty of Languages and Literatures. Following his PhD, he obtained a Master of Public Administration in Science Management from the German University of Administrative Sciences Speyer.
