Prof. Dr. Knut Blind
Prof. Dr. Knut Blind has held the Chair of Innovation Economics at the Technical University of Berlin since 2006. From 2008 to 2016, he held the Endowed Chair in Standardization at the Rotterdam School of Management at Erasmus University Rotterdam. He also heads the “Regulation and Innovation” business unit at the Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research ISI.
His research focuses on the interplay between regulation and innovation. On the one hand, he conducts micro- and macroeconomic research into how regulatory frameworks influence companies’ innovation behavior. On the other hand, he examines standardization as a form of self-regulation—both in formal bodies and in consortia. He analyzes standardization as an instrument of knowledge and technology transfer at the intersection of R&D, public procurement, and cluster promotion. Intellectual property rights—from patents to open-source licenses—constitute another key area of focus.
Methodologically, his work is based primarily on econometric analyses of economic data, surveys, and indicators he has developed himself. In 2017, he was elected to the German Academy of Science and Engineering (acatech) in recognition of his research contributions.
